First-person accounts have emphasised the importance of this formulating and ‘sense making’ process for both the relationship with the therapist and for good outcome in therapy; ‘therapy helped me see that psychosis is quite a logical process and that I had a definite road to psychotic crisis … [The therapist] talked about lessening distress and never talked about fixing a disorder or dealing with maladaptive coping strategies’ (Sen, 2017).

Qualitative research has highlighted other factors that clients perceive to be important in enabling them to engage with therapy and develop a relationship with their therapist, including trusting the therapist (Coursey et al., 1995; Kilbride et al., 2013), feeling liked and respected (Coursey et al., 1995), having a sense of control over the process (Kilbride et al., 2013), having difficult experiences listened to and taken seriously (McGowan et al., 2005), therapists being genuine and non-judgemental and able to tolerate their distress (Wood et al., 2015).
